Al Jazeera’s Ali Sawa, reporting from Baghdad, said the country’s interior ministry said that a new ceramic tile mural had been installed at the site, which has been under construction since 2014.
“The interior ministry says that this mural is finished,” he said.
“This is one of the most ambitious and most important projects undertaken by the Iraqi government since it began building the country.”
The project had originally been expected to be completed in the autumn.
Al Jazeera was unable to independently verify the claim.
The ministry also said that the work had been completed and would be completed within a year.
However, Al Jazeera could not independently confirm the timeline for completion.
The Ministry of Culture said the project was part of an ongoing programme to create a unique cultural heritage site.
